Networking Tips: Old but Gold

Networking in business means purposefully connecting with other professionals, not just handing out or collecting business cards. It's about building relationships. Having a great network is an effective way to promote your business because you will get to participate in real conversations, connect with like-minded people, and create new opportunities. Some people, even though they have participated in many networking events, somehow still have a hard time talking to other people or starting a conversation.

With other people, this is an almost innate ability or habit that occurs naturally and is practised on a daily basis. Whilst in reverse, especially those new to networking or those with an introverted personality, this can be challenging.

A lot of people ask, "What's the best way to network?"

The fact is, there's really no single definitive answer to this question.

However, here are some tips and tricks to make a positive, professional impression:

  • Stop talking about yourself! Listen to the other person, and give them your attention. This is an opportunity to make real connections, not rehearsal monologue time.
  • Be curious because you will always learn new things from others.
  • It's okay to have something like an "elevator pitch" ready so that you can briefly describe your business, but instead of giving a practised speech about your business, be open, honest, and passionate about your vision.
  • Talk to people different to you rather than only being drawn to those who are similar or seem to have immediate benefit. It will give you new insights and a different perspective. We don't know who will help. Often it's the person you least expect.
  • Follow up new contacts so that they will remember who you are and keep the momentum going. Include links to information you shared during the conversation with them, or refer others who might be able to help them with something.
  • Do your research before attending a new networking event. This gives you context about the companies involved and a starting point for discussion. If you're not sure, sit back and observe for a while, see what kind of companies are out there and how they interact, then follow along.

The key is just be yourself

You’re now ready to go out and make some new friends 😉
