My name is Scott Beattie from Carbrook and this is my story….
Most importantly, how am I with Jo (that’s the most common question that I get asked – along the lines of how does she put up with you etc) – we met at high school and went out for some time – (we did go to the drive in and watch Look Who’s Talking in my Ford Escort!!). We were on and off until she turned 21, she went overseas, I went to Sydney, she got married, I got married, she got divorced, I got divorced and in 2002 we got back together and in 2003 we got married and have 2 children together, Morgan (Boy) who is almost 9, Darcy (girl) who is almost 13 and Jacob who has finished school and doing a trade.
I am the son of an accountant mother & father, brother of a maths teacher and the brother of a brother who was good at maths! I didn’t like maths and wasn’t that great at it…..
My dream was not at all to be in the insurance and or finance industry, it was in the media – I had a strong background both in front of and behind a TV camera and worked at Channel 10 (Brisbane) during school. Being 18, working in the media it was great – great to pull chicks!! Unfortunately Channel 10 went into receivership and it was clear that the media was potentially not going to be stable work – so I looked in the newspaper (that’s how we searched for jobs back then!!) and there was a role with the CBA!
My experience varies from the CBA, Suncorp, FAI, a general insurance broker, CBA Insurance, the worst 6 weeks of my life as a F&I consultant in a car yard in Sydney, Allianz, ING, a recruiter in the f&I industry, a start up non-bank in Sydney, AAMI before starting Cube, June 1, 2005.
Cube Home Loans started with FAST back in the day and we had some great success very early on focussing on low doc, high LVR and non-confirming loans which we felt were under serviced back then.
When the GFC hit and we realised that we needed to diversify fast and we did. Focussing on planning, motor / P&E finance. We were fortunate enough to win the AMA’s in 2011 for Diversification. In 2009 we changed from ALCo to Connective and haven’t looked back!
Around the AMA’s, we were in a position to sell Cube Central. We sold our brand, but not our trail book. I become a dad for just under 18 months. In that time, I was on the kindy committee, I read at school once per week with my daughter’s class, did tuckshop (if you are a single guy, I would highly recommend doing this!!) and I also become a C.Dec, did my diploma in mortgage broking and became a volunteer lifesaver. (The truth be told that Jo wanted me out of the house!!!).
As a favour to a recruiter that I know, I did 6 weeks work with RACQ in their claims area before deciding to come back to Cube, initially as a consultant, then as a co-owner and now Jo & I are back as full owners.
Since then, we have started Cube Accounting & Bookkeeping, Cube Realty (property sales and management), Cube Financial Planning, Cube Health Insurance, Cube Connect (for services when you are moving) – so in affect, a full service offering with pretty well anything to do with insurance and finance other than transactional banking and credit cards.
Award wise, we have picked up a state or national based award, each year of our operation, notably the Best Independent Office 2017, 2016 & 2015 and this year, we also the Editors Choice Award at the Better Business Awards. As a loan writer, I settle 140+ loans per year along with other products and managing Cube in conjunction with an awesome team.
Our most senior broker has been with us for more than 10 years and we have a great team. As you can gather from my posts, I try and have as much fun as we can – not to say we don’t have the stressful days as we do, but I feel that I have found my calling in what we do here at Cube!
